Description:

Summer cookouts wouldn't be the same without some classic staples - hot dogs, BBQ, and sauerkraut. This recipe combines those flavors for a sweet and tangy dish. You can serve this as a side on its own, or use it for a topping on your hot dogs at your gatherings this summer. It's incredibly easy to double or triple the recipe depending on the amount of people you're hosting. The below recipe creates about 8 servings, so adjust as needed.

Ingredients:

1 cup onion, chopped

1 jar (16 ounce) Jake & Amos Sauerkraut, drained

6 slices bacon, diced

1 can (16 ounce) diced tomatoes (can also use fresh if you have them on hand)

3/4 cup BBQ sauce of your choice

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons brown grain mustard

1/3 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons smoked paprika

Directions:
  1. Saute bacon, smoked paprika, and onion in a medium-sized saucepan. Use the butter to caramelize the onion.

  2. Combine Jake & Amos Sauerkraut, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, tomatoes, mustard, and sauteed bacon and onions in a two-quart baking dish.

  3. Baked uncovered at 350 degrees for one hour. Cover and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Sauerkraut should have a caramel color around the edges when done.

  4. Serve with hot dogs or your favorite grilled food!
